iPhone 13 Mini vs iPhone 12 Mini – Detailed Comparision Guide

Apple’s newest smartphones are exciting — at least on paper. In addition to a new A15 Bionic processor, the iPhone 13 Pro will feature cameras with larger sensors for better low-light photos, larger batteries, and displays that refresh quickly in response to the user’s input. That’s really impressive.

The iPhone 13 is such a significant improvement that it appears to be a large step up from the iPhone 12 on the first inspection. Additionally, these new devices, released only last year, are some of the best available on the market.

The new handsets offer the following specs, and the iPhone 13 appears to improve on the iPhone 12.

iPhone 13 Mini vs iPhone 12 Mini: A Quick Comparison

  • 13 mini will last a half-hour longer than 12 mini.
  • A newer phone that is a bit thicker and heavier.
  • The same 5.4″ screen size, but now with a 60Hz OLED.
  • Apple A15 processor on 13-inch MacBook Pro is faster than Apple A14 on the previous model but has the same 4GB RAM and 128GB base storage.
  • The 13 mini has two cameras, but one is more advanced than the other.

iPhone 13 Mini vs iPhone 12 Mini – Display and Design

iPhone 13 Mini vs iPhone 12 Mini

Although the iPhone 13 Pro’s ProMotion function, which doubles refresh rates to 120Hz, was long overdue, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini don’t benefit from it.

On the one hand, I am disappointed to learn that the Mini’s screen is running at only 60Hz. On the other hand, a higher refresh rate could have harmed the already limited battery life, so there is that.

However, the 13 mini has a slightly brighter display, capable of reaching up to 800 nits in brightness, while the 12 mini’s brightness maxes out at 625 nits.

The only design change you’ll notice is the lack of green, and a new pink variant arrives for the 13 mini. Blue, for example, is a slightly different shade of blue.

Although Apple may choose to make the 13 Mini a bit thicker and heavier for internal modifications, the overall styling should remain the same with a rectangular look, flat sides. This device is very small, so a minor setback is to be expected. And the two cameras on the back no longer run in a vertical line, but rather in a diagonal line.

iPhone 13 Mini vs iPhone 12 Mini – Battery and Charging

iPhone 13 Mini vs iPhone 12 Mini

The iPhone 13 mini, like all other iPhone 13 models, get a battery boost, and the iPhone 13 mini is no exception.

Apple has not specified the exact battery capacity of the iPhone 13 mini, but Apple’s website shows that the iPhone 13 mini features a 2,425mAh battery compared to the 2,227mAh battery found in the iPhone 12 mini. That represents a nearly 10% gain in capacity.

Apple claims that your phone will have up to an extra 1.5 hours of battery life! The iPhone 13 mini offers twice the battery life when streaming video as compared to the iPhone 12 mini, which offers just 10 hours.

What’s astounding is that the 13 mini now has a longer video streaming battery life than the iPhone 12 Pro Max (rated at 12 hours)! We’re absolutely thrilled to give this a go; the figures are quite compelling!

There isn’t much to report on the charger front. If you don’t already have a charger, you should expect to spend $20 to $30 for a high-speed charger, as Apple no longer ships a charger in the box.

However, Apple’s “fast charger” has an output of only 20W, which is slower than most other phones. An iPhone 13 mini fully charges in about 90 minutes.

Also, the MagSafe wireless charging system will operate at speeds of up to 15W in the new Mini.

iPhone 13 Mini vs iPhone 12 Mini – Cameras

The front-facing camera on the 13 mini has been upgraded, but there’s still a 12-megapixel rear camera.
The 13 mini’s wide camera has been enhanced.

Not only is the camera layout new, but the cameras themselves have been upgraded.

Hardware-wise, the camera system has a dual-lens system with a wide plus ultra-wide lens on the back, and there are no hardware differences.

Two wide-angle lenses, both set to f/1.6 and a focal length of 26mm.
Both cameras have 0.5X ultra-wide lenses with 13mm focal length and an f/2.4 aperture.

Apple promises a “new wide camera” that comes with a shiny new sensor that captures 47% more light and sensor-shift OIS for improved stability.

Two new software features were added:

Cinematic Mode — a video option that mimics Portrait mode. The new iPhone analyses video footage in real-time and blurs the background to produce a bokeh effect. You’ll be able to adjust color, highlights, and shadows on individual elements of a photo with these new AI filters (be it an object or a person)

These features, including the zoom lens, LiDAR scanner, and macro mode, are features only available on the Pro models and are not present on the iPhone 13 mini.

iPhone 13 Mini vs iPhone 12 Mini – Performance

The new Apple A15 Bionic performs admirably.

Apple has the fastest chips in the industry, and the new Apple A15 Bionic chip, which is found in all iPhone models, adds to that advantage. You’ll notice improvements in CPU, GPU, and AI performance, as well as improvements in camera ISP.

The Apple A15 chip uses the same 5nm technology as the A14 chip from last year, but it has 15 billion transistors instead of 11.8 billion on the A14 chip.

There is a slight increase in speed, which analysts believe is due to Apple increasing the cache to help with multi-core results and bumping CPU speed for better single-core results.

The iPhone 13 mini, on the other hand, is not expected to receive a RAM upgrade and will continue to use the same 4GB RAM as its predecessor.

The 13 mini now comes with 128GB of storage, which is an unexpected but very welcome upgrade! Previously, the base model of the 12 mini had 64GB of storage, which was — let’s face it — far too little for most users.

Connectivity will be one area where the iPhone 13 series, in general, will take things up a notch, with expanded support for 5G mobile bands.

Final Words

You’d think phones would get better with each generation, but the differences between the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 12 are striking. Better storage options, a faster processor, and camera improvements would be enough to justify the upgrade.

With better battery life and — in the case of the iPhone 13 Pro models — fast-refreshing displays, this is a significant improvement over last year’s model.

In the coming weeks, look for our iPhone 13 reviews to see how much of an upgrade these new phones are.
